Imatra steel mill's bloom furnace modernization reduces CO2 emissions of the bloom heating by approximately 25 percent
Ovako Imatra's bloom furnace burners were upgraded during the summer maintenance shutdown in 2023, with an investment value of approximately 3 million euros. The main contractor for the project was the Swedish company Linde. The goal of the investment is to reduce the use of fossil natural gas, improve energy efficiency in this production phase, and reduce associated emissions.

Ovako Imatra will launch an apprenticeship training program in January 2024
The application period for the apprenticeship training is ongoing, and ends on October 22, 2023. The training program offers 20 starting positions, with 15 placements in production tasks and 5 in mechanical maintenance. The studies will commence on January 15, 2024. The aim of the training is to prepare for future recruitment needs.

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in the effort towards a more sustainable steel industry, with the potential for substantial reductions in global emissions, including other heavy industries. The Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will inaugurate the facility on-site on September 5th 2023.

Inauguration date set for Sweden's largest electrolyzer for fossil-free hydrogen production
Swedish steel production is taking a significant step towards sustainability with the date now set for the inauguration of the world's first plant to produce fossil-free hydrogen for heating steel before rolling. On September 5th 2023, Ovako, the leading European manufacturer of steel and one of the largest steel recyclers in the Nordic countries, will inaugurate the hydrogen plant at its Hofors mill. It will also be Sweden's largest electrolysis facility.
