Sustainability in 2020

The steel industry, just like the whole of the wider world, faces a major challenge – reducing our climate footprint. Individuals, authorities, organizations and companies all need to make a transition, and the steel industry has a role to play.

Head of Sustainability and Safety Ovako

Sustainability is part of our DNA at Ovako. It is integrated into everything we do, and we are working actively to further minimize our impact. Our steel production is based on recycled steel scrap and Nordic fossil-free electricity, and Ovako already has a world-leading low carbon footprint – 80% lower than the global average. Most of our residual products are reused, and are applied in areas such as building resilient roads. Through continuous improvements to our production process, Ovako’s environmental impact is being constantly reduced and we are always striving to cut the emissions from our product manufacturing. We are well on our way, but we never stop trying to be even better.

“Sustainability is an integral part of our business, and our solid efforts are paying off. In 2019, we hit our target to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 %. But we are not satisfied yet, and we are continuing on our journey together with our customers, for a sustainable future with clean steel,” says Katarina Hundermark, Head of Sustainability and Safety at Ovako.

During the year, we will talk about the work we are doing to contribute to a more sustainable steel industry based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ovako supports the UN’s Global Sustainable Development Goals and has identified the areas where we can contribute – and we will talk more about how we achieve this during 2020. We will hear from some of our colleagues who work actively on these topics about what we are doing in each area, and we will hear their views on sustainability. We hope you will join us.
